Project Overview

"clash of katydids
barefoot in the dew lush grass
the bright watching stars"

-Peter Galen Massey

The main objective for this project was to developed an eight page booklet
that created a non-literal visualization of a haiku, a traditional Japanese poem.
In the development of this project, a cohesive system was created using the
implementation of design elements like composition, typography, and shape
..
The poem used for this project was written by Peter Galen Massey, as a part
of his collection of spring haiku. The haiku is the reflection of what the senses
experience on a warm spring evening, and focuses on the simple, nostalgic beauty
of the transition from day to night.
Sketching

Each line of the haiku focuses on a different physical sensation that the poet feels
during his evening outside, with each line expressing what the poet hears, feels, and
sees respectively. To best visualize these sensations and represent the poet's dreamlike
writing style, the use of letter-spacing, figure-ground reversal, and the angles of the
√2 rectangular composition was prioritized.

Digital Iteration

Throughout iteration development, the diagonal angles of the √2 rectangle and
figure-ground reversal were used to emulate the idea of transition and movement. Specific
design elements were used throughout each page to create a sense of unity, while also
drawing unique aspects of their associated line of the haiku.
For example, the repetitive diagonal
lines are used to represent the chirping patterns of katydids, the feeling of grass underfoot,
and the movement of falling stars.
